Accidental Disability Cover

Get financial peace of mind if you cannot complete your studies and start working because of an accident.

Accidents can happen to anyone, even if you’re young and healthy. If you become permanently disabled because of an accident, you may be unable to finish your studies and to follow your dream career. Knowing that you will be able to take care of your expenses will minimise the financial pressure on you and your family.

Benefits

  • Accidental disability cover will help you and your parents or loved ones take care of your medical and living expenses if you:
    • Become permanently disabled because of an accident
    • Are accidentally infected with HIV, for example a needle-stick injury (very relevant for medical students)
    • Are infected with HIV because of a rape incident

How it works

You make monthly payments of R34. If you become permanently disabled or are infected with HIV, you will receive a tax-free one-off pay-out of R1 000 000.
You can take out this cover if you are in your fourth year of study and younger than 30 years, and studying towards most professional disciplines.

Optional extras

You can combine accidental disability cover with any of the insurance options below. If you’re not sure of the level of cover you need or don’t understand any of the cover options, it’s always a good idea to talk to a financial planner who has the expertise to help people manage their money in a way that’s best suited to their current needs.

  • Life Insurance and Final Expenses Cover for if you pass away while you’re studying
  • Future Cover that ensures you can take out additional life insurance in future even if your health deteriorates
  • Accidental Injury Cover for if you suffer an injury because of an accident but can still continue your studies

Life Insurance

Help your family pay for your funeral and debt if you pass away.

Although you are now just enjoying your student life and dreaming about the future, life is unpredictable and death can come at any time, whatever your age. You don’t want your parents and loved ones to deal with an additional financial burden on top of their loss. Life Insurance for Student Professionals can help them cover the necessary expenses if something happens to you.

Benefits

  • Life insurance will help your beneficiaries (for example your parents) to settle your debt, like your study loan, or to pay for your funeral.
  • Your beneficiaries will not pay tax on the proceeds of your life insurance
  • We will only ask you for your health and lifestyle information once when you take out the insurance. You don’t have to tell us if you change your lifestyle activities or smoking habits – we’ll carry this risk.

How it works

You have three options:

  • Life Insurance
You make monthly payments of R10. If you pass away, your nominated beneficiaries will receive a tax-free one-off pay-out of R100 000.
  • Final Expense Benefit
You make monthly payments of R1. If you pass away, your nominated beneficiaries will receive a tax-free one-off pay-out of R10 000 within 48 hours so that they can cover urgent costs, like your funeral.
  • Future Cover
You make monthly payments of R50. If your health deteriorates (for example, you are diagnosed with an illness), you can buy additional life insurance without having to proof your health. In other words, the state of your health won’t prevent you from taking out additional life insurance.

Requirements to take out this plan

  • You must be in your fourth academic year or higher
  • You must be younger than 30
  • Studying towards one of Sanlam's specified professional occupations
