The annual Entrepreneur of the Year® competition sponsored by Sanlam and BUSINESS/PARTNERS honours successful South African entrepreneurs in the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector. The competition was initiated by Business Partners Limited in 1989 and initially only open to Business Partners Limited clients, it was opened to all South African SMEs in 2010, with Sanlam as the co-sponsor.
The competition is open to all SME owners from all industries. It has five award categories namely; Emerging Entrepreneur (businesses that have been in operation for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years on the date the entry form is received by the steering committee; there are no limitations in terms of turnover. The controlling owner must be stated.); Small Business Entrepreneur (businesses with a turnover of a maximum of R30 million in the tax year immediately preceding the date of entering the competition; there are no limitations in terms of years in operation. The controlling owner must be stated.); Medium Business Entrepreneur (businesses with a turnover of more than R30 million in the tax year immediately preceding the date of entering the competition; there are no limitations in terms of years in operation. The controlling owner must be stated.); Job Creator of the Year (businesses which employ a significant number of employees and plays a key role in uplifting, up-skilling and training them) and Innovator of the Year (businesses which are innovative in the product or service they offer to the market). Two additional award categories are awarded at the discretion of the judges and the steering committee, namely Judges Prize and Lifetime Achiever categories.
Finalists stand the chance to win prizes worth a total value of R2 000 000, which includes cash prizes of R70 000 for each category winner, R40 000 for the Judges Prize winner and R200 000 for the overall winner. Furthermore, all category winners will receive vouchers for mentorship and diagnostic analysis of their business to the value of R40 000 each and R45 000 for the Judges Prize winner. All winners will also get extensive exposure in public domain to boost sales and their company profiles.
