Founding Partner: True South Actuaries
Paul qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1996 and obtained the Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) designation in 2012. He represents the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) on the Financial Services Board’s SAM industry task team, serves on several of ASSA’s committees (TCF, Microinsurance, Risk Management and Health) and is a member of the microinsurance working group of the International Actuarial Association.
After spending the first ten years of his career at Sanlam, Paul was one of the founding partners of True South Actuaries and Consultants in 2001. True South consults widely to insurers, regulatory authorities, government entities and industry bodies and is the third largest provider of statutory actuarial services in South Africa. The firm is majority black owned, with a level 2 B-BBEE rating under the Amended B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice (2013).
Medical Adviser: Sanlam
Dr Starke obtained a BSc and MB ChB degree at the University of Pretoria. He qualified as a specialist in Disability Medicine in the USA in 2000, and was in private medical practice for 16 years.
He joined Sanlam as a medical adviser in 1996. He is currently involved in underwriting and claims assessments, and also advises on product development and fraud investigations.
Product Actuary: Sanlam
As a product actuary for Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF), Petrie Marx is responsible for the development of risk products for SPF. After joining Sanlam in 1995, he occupied various roles in the actuarial and systems development department until he was appointed into his current position in 2001. Marx holds a BCom (Hons) from the University of Stellenbosch and qualified as an actuary in 2000.
Product Development Actuary: Sanlam Personal Finance
Karen Bongers is a product development actuary on the individual risk side of Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF). Her role includes the design and implementation of new risk products.
In 2000, Karen was the top matriculant in the province of Gauteng. After obtaining her BSc (Hons) degree in Actuarial science at the University of Pretoria, she started her career as an actuarial analyst at Discovery Life. Upon qualifying as an actuary through the UK Institute of Actuaries in 2007, she accepted a position as product actuary at Momentum Myriad. In 2009, Karen lived and worked abroad, as a pricing actuary for London-based PruProtect, Discovery’s joint venture with UK insurer Prudential.
Upon returning to South Africa in 2010, she joined Sanlam first as a pricing actuary, and thereafter as a product development actuary in her current role.
Estate, Trust, Tax and Financial Consultant
Errol is a Certified Financial Planner®, Admitted Advocate of the High Court (SA), Ex SARS Tax Advocate and a Master Tax Professional (SA)™ with 27 years’ experience in estate planning, financial planning, trust and the tax industry. He holds various degrees and post-graduate diplomas and obtained qualifications in teaching, law, finance and taxation. He has authored numerous tax and financial planning related articles as well as newsletters and study material for banking institutions, corporates and universities.
Errol presents seminars throughout South Africa and is a renowned lecturer, examiner and moderator for various universities in South Africa. He established a consulting practice and consults extensively to high net worth individuals and assist taxpayers with tax disputes.
He authored a book – Notes on Estate and Financial Plans - Meyer on Case Studies 2015, 3rd Edition, now prescribed by universities.
Managing Director: CaseJohnson
Bruce Sahd is the managing director of CaseJohnson, a specialist marketing firm offering advisory, management and technology solutions that focus on alternative distribution strategies for insurance in African markets. Bruce has over 20 years’ international experience in this specialised field, having worked with clients in South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and India. As a recognised authority in this field he is a frequent speaker at conferences in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Bahrain, Dubai, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa, with several articles published in leading South African and Kenyan insurance journals. Bruce has a background in management accounting, strategy and business development consulting, having also worked and lived in the UK and the Netherlands. He has a Philosophy degree from Leuven University in Belgium and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
TV personality and journalist
A highly-requested chairman, master of ceremonies or facilitator at conferences, Jeremy co-anchors - with Iman Rappetti - News Night on eNCA. He also hosts "Power Update" daily on PowerFM.
Jeremy has been a journalist for almost 30 years and has worked across all media platforms – newspapers, radio, television and magazines. He started his career as a cadet reporter on The Herald newspaper in Port Elizabeth and later moved to the Sunday Tribune in Durban. He then spent 10 years at Radio 702, eventually rising to Head of News and was instrumental in developing the Eyewitness News brand.
He then ventured into television and was lead anchor on am-today on SABC2 – the respected morning news and current affairs programme. Later he hosted the hit television quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire that ran for over 100 episodes. During that time, he joined SABC radio and started the long-running Sunday morning show, “media@safm” which focused on the advertising and communications industries.
He also presented PM Live and then AM Live – arguably the country’s most influential current affairs radio show, which included the After 8 Debate. He left the SABC in April 2008 to join the eNCA where is now co-presenter of the flagship evening current affairs programme News Night.
Jeremy was also the advertising and media writer for the Financial Mail and was responsible for the authoritative yearly industry review called Ad Focus.
He now publishes his own hardcover review of the industry called "The Annual". He continues to watch the industry with a programme on eNCA called Maggs on Media. He is also heard on Power FM 98.7 with his own Sunday morning magazine programme. He is also the editor of the marketing website The Red Zone, its spinoff magazine and Directorship magazine.
