Sing ‘It attracts record entries

The Sing ‘It l Lyrics competition, a first for South Africa where a corporate sponsor meets artists to develop young talent, has attracted a record number of entries from all corners of South Africa and even from abroad, a whopping 1 623 entries.

The unique competition, a collaboration between lead sponsor Sanlam, organisers LitNet and MK (DStv channel 403) and nine of the country’s top singers and bands, invited South Africans to enter their lyrics for selection, composition and possible recording by the artists.

All of the 1 623 entries are now with the participating artists – Karen Zoid, Jax Panik, DJ Cleo, Dans Dans Lisa, Bittereinder, iScream & the Chocolate Stix, Niskerone & SFR, Dance, You’re on Fire and HHP. Nine songs will be selected for recording by the artists. Says Andre Kearns, Sanlam sponsorship manager: “As a truly South African company we not only celebrate local content and support local talent, but the onus is on us to give a platform for our youth to be creative and create music that will be there for years to come.

“With Sing ‘It we also give people the chance to start something in line with Sanlam’s National Start Something Day campaign. We believe that to realise your hopes and dreams you have to start somewhere and the sooner you start the sooner you can reap the rewards.”

Sing ‘It, launched in September this year, has attracted more entries in its debut year than the more established four-year-old songwriting competition by a popular magazine, which attracts just 1200 entries. “The number of entries shows that our diverse youth are hungry for channels to express their feelings on especially the current state of our nation,” says LitNet’s Steyn du Toit, project manager. Winning songwriters in the Sing ‘It Lyrics competition will each receive R3 000, an iPad 2 and the chance for their song to be recorded.

All nine songs will be available for download from the Sing ‘It website: http://singit.litnet.co.za, Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/singit and Twitter: @singit2011.10.19 for two months from 1 December. The song with the most downloads will receive funding from MK for the production of a music video. The video will be shown on MK and on other DStv channels, and will also be available online. The writer of the winning lyrics will also have the choice to be in the video with compliments of Sing ‘It.
