Investing Internationally

There are essentially two options available to local investors seeking international diversification.

  • The first method is to obtain South African Reserve Bank (SARB) approval to invest in foreign currency, using your individual offshore allowance (currently R4 million).
  • The second method is to use an investment company’s offshore allowance, known as an asset-swap.

Method 1 – Direct investment

Currency conversion – Glacier International can facilitate the conversion of South African rands to USD, EUR or GBP if investors need help to make investments into the Global Life or Global Collection Plans. (These plans accept only USD/EUR/GBP).

Tax clearance certificates - Glacier International can assist potential clients to obtain tax clearance from SARS. We can send in the application forms and collect the tax clearance certificates.

Method 2 – Asset-swap

By using an investment company’s offshore allowance, investors obtain exposure to foreign markets without having to move money offshore. An advantage of this approach is that investors don’t have to obtain SARB approval and therefore have no restriction on the amount that can be invested offshore. Investors in these funds are protected under the regulations of the SA Financial Services Board.
