Glacier’s social investment initiative, with its main emphasis on community upliftment, was established in 2002.
The projects driven by the social investment team are primarily funded by internal fund-raising events, often supported by our intermediaries, with some additional funding from external sources. Staff from all departments across the company is involved in identifying, co-ordinating and facilitating the projects.
Umephi Children's Home
Umephi is a satellite residence that originated from the Susan la Poorta Children's home, with which Glacier has had a long-standing relationship over the last few years. Umephi is a place of safety for abandoned, orphaned, neglected and abused children. In addition to improving the condition of their house, we help meet the children's material needs, interact with them regularly and take them on outings.
During December, employees form a choir to sing Christmas carols at several retirement homes in the community such as Huis André van der Walt.
Habitat for Humanity
Together with employees from other businesses in the Sanlam Group, Glacier employees unite with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organisation, to build houses for underprivileged families. We have been participating in this great event annually since 2004.
In 2007, Glacier invited financial intermediaries to take part as well, and the initiative was co-sponsored by some of the Management Companies, providing a week of fun and team-building for all.
