The shortlisted entries were selected by an independent adjudication panel from over 80 entries by journalists across the African continent. The 2021 Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year, as well as category winners, will be announced at a gala event in Johannesburg on 11 August 2022.
The awards recognise outstanding financial journalists in print, online, radio and TV media who are based in Africa, working in an African news organisation and publishing, or broadcasting their work on the continent. Through their work, the finalists represent the best financial journalism in Africa, reporting insightful business stories that highlight the continent’s challenges and progress in the globalised economy.
The shortlisted entrants are:
Mr Nixon Kariithi, Chair of the Independent Judging Panel and a communications consultant, led the review of submissions. He was joined by Ms Paula Fray – Media Development Trainer; Ms Ylva Rodny-Gumede – Media Academic; Mr Ulrich Joubert – Independent Economist; and Mr Charles Naude – former Business News Editor, all based in South Africa. The internationally-based judges were Ms Angela Agoawike (Nigeria) – Media Practitioner; Mr Tom Indimuli (Kenya) – Communications Consultant; and Ms Emily Brown (Namibia) – Media Lecturer.
Established in 1974, the Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism recognise exceptional financial journalism in Africa. The awards carry a total prize purse of about R500,000.
